One of the biggest mistakes athletes make is stopping strength training during the season. It’s understandable—practices, games, and recovery take up a lot of time. But if you stop training completely, you risk losing strength, speed, and power as the season progresses. The best athletes don’t just maintain their abilities in-season—they continue to build and improve while managing fatigue.
The Science Behind In-Season Training
When you train, you break down muscle fibers and deplete energy stores, which leads to fatigue. But with proper recovery, the body adapts and comes back stronger—this is called supercompensation (see image below).
If you stop training altogether, you miss out on the supercompensation effect, and your performance starts to decline. Strength, speed, and power take months to build but only weeks to lose. This is why in-season training isn’t optional—it’s necessary if you want to stay at your peak throughout the season.
How to Train Smart During the Season
The key to in-season training is adjusting volume and intensity so that you’re maximizing performance without adding unnecessary fatigue. Here’s what we focus on with our athletes at Apache:
1. Maintain Strength & Power
2. Prioritize Recovery
3. Avoid Overuse Injuries
